In addition to our core businesses of analytical and measuring instruments, medical systems and equipment, aircraft equipment, and industrial equipment, Shimadzu also delivers products and services that provide solutions for 21st century growth areas such as life sciences, environmental technology, semiconductors, and flat panel displays. In life sciences, we provide instruments, reagents, and contractual analytical services, focusing on protein analysis technology which has become increasingly important in the development of new medical treatments and pharmaceuticals. We are committed to doing our part to create a society where people can live healthy, rich lives.

In the environmental field, our technology and products contribute to environmental preservation, in such areas as development of fixation technology that helps to reduce carbon dioxide emissions, as well as the development of secondary water treatment systems that reduce environmental impact, made possible due to advancements in usage of recycled factory wastewater, as well as others.

Moreover, in the area of semiconductors and flat-panel displays, Shimadzu now develops and provides a variety of equipment. These include liquid-crystal inspection systems, essential for quality control of the recently extremely popular thin-type panel displays, and turbo-molecular pumps, essential for creating the super-vacuum conditions required in semiconductor manufacturing processes.

Thus, we are concentrating our R&D efforts in the area of next-generation medical treatments, specifically on the development of a molecular imaging system that can detect cancer at an extremely early stage.

Furthermore, in environmental areas, we are responding to society's need to reduce both the burden imposed on the environment as well as the needs of business for new energy, in the form of environmental recovery technology that improves contaminated soil. In the field of energy, we provide measurement instruments essential for fuel cell development - recently the focus of attention as a supply of next-generation energy.
We are striving to become a truly global business that responds to world-wide customer needs.
We are now completing our global system for providing products and services to the United States, Europe, China, and Asia in order to respond to the world's rapidly expanding borderless market. We are also establishing new centers in the United States that will be centers for global marketing operations. Additionally, we will consolidate our current research and development, production, sales and service resources in each global region. These improvements will allow us to add even more value to the high-quality products and services we provide to our global customers.

Furthermore, in China, we are implementing high-speed marketing, development, as well as expanding production in order to keep in step with the country's rapidly growing market.
